(Reuters Health - Chicago, IL - May 15, 2004) - In contrast to the view that people who donate a kidney are easily manipulated, new research shows that kidney donors are actually more emotionally stable and socially outgoing than the average adult.

In a personality study of more than 200 potential kidney donors, researchers found that the donors were friendlier, less anxious and had generally brighter outlooks on life compared with the average person.

House Approves Legislation On Organ Transplant Policy
(Washington) Taking on an issue that means life or death to transplant patients, the House voted Tuesday to block a Clinton administration effort to move more hearts, livers and kidneys to those who are closest to death.

The legislation would strip the Department of Health and Human Services of its power to set transplant policy and comes after years of tension between HHS and the United Network for Organ Sharing, the private firm that has long run the transplant system under a government contract.

2003 Deceased Organ Donation At Highest Rate In Five Years
(Richmond, VA) Preliminary statistics indicate that 6,455 people became deceased organ donors in the United States in 2003. This represents an increase of 4.3 percent over the previous year, the highest annual increase since 1998. These statistics are compiled by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), which is operated by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) under federal contract.

A total of 25,448 transplants were performed with organs from both deceased and living donors. In addition, the number of transplant candidates who died awaiting a transplant in 2003 fell to 5,968 after exceeding 6,000 each year since 1999.

Brockington Pushes For Organ Donor Tax Breaks
(Madison, WI) One of the Green Bay Packers' all-time rushing leaders spent a few moments Monday urging Wisconsin lawmakers to help the state lead in another area: live organ donation.

John Brockington, the former running back who became the first National Football League player to exceed 1,000 yards rushing in each of his first three seasons, testified on a bill that would offer tax breaks to live organ donors. It would be the first law of its kind in the nation.

Testifying before a Senate committee via speaker phone from San Diego, Brockington said he received a life-saving kidney transplant in November 2001 from a longtime fan and friend, Diane Scott, who later became his wife.
